I’m getting Time Warner Cable DSL and need help setting up a wireless network with two laptops?

My husband and I each have a laptop. We do not have a desktop computer at home at all.

We’re getting Time Warner because it’s all that’s available in our area.

So, we want to set up a wireless home network. Do we need a desktop to do this or can we do this all wirelessly with our laptops?

I’ve set up a network with a desktop (my mom’s AT&T DSL) and laptop and I didn’t see any directions for setting things up without a desktop.

If it’s possible to do this with wirelessly with our two laptops, please explain how this works. I’m just not techno savvy enough to visualize it.

Thanks!

The process is exactly the same for two laptops as it is for desktops. Just make sure that both of your laptops have wireless cards installed.

You will either be provided with a router from Time Warner, or you may have to purchase one yourself. Either way, once you have the router, plug the DSL line into the router. The port that you must connect the line to may be labeled with some text that says something similar to “Internet IN”, “Internet Link”, or “Phone Line IN”.

Turn the router on. Hopefully, the router came with an instruction manual, because you will need this if there is a default password.

Turn one of the laptop computers on and scan for wireless networks. Yours should have a very generic name that reflects the name of the router (ex. “linksys” or “NETGEAR”). It will not have any encryption yet, so you will be able to connect to it without entering a passphrase.

Once you are connected, enter the IP address of the router (often referred to as “Default Gateway) into a web browser. Once you do this, you should see a configuration page. From here, you can set up a WEP, WPA, or WPA2 passphrase. This will prevent others from accessing the network.

Note that even if one of the laptops does not have a wireless card installed, most wireless routers have both wifi and Ethernet interfaces. This means that the laptop that does have a wireless card will be able to connect wirelessly, while the one that does not have a wireless card will be able to connect via an Ethernet cable.
