Need help buying Mobile Phone in Delhi that will work in Delhi & Mumbai?
I’m visiting Delhi (from US) and want a local (Indian) mobile phone to use for a week. Then I want to give this phone to my 14 yr old niece, who lives in Mumbai as a gift. She currently uses her Mom’s hand-me-down basic Nokia and wants something that’s more current! She would like to listen to her music (MP3) and take/share pictures with her friends (camera with at least 2 mega pixels?). I was browsing Nokia India site and 5330 looks like a good phone – also fits my budget!
Unfortunately, I don’t know much about mobile industry in India and need help…. can’t ask her dad (my bro) as he’ll try to talk me out of doing this! I thought read somewhere that phones bought in one city (Delhi) don’t necessarily work in other cities? Is this true? Is it a phone unit issue or SIM card issue? Appreciate any information/help.
Thanks for the info everyone.
Buying a Nokia phone or any other phone does not entitle you to a connection. You will have to register the same with a service provider to get a connection via a sim card.
You will have to go through the hassles of Registration and it may take some time say a week or so. Since your stay is for a short duration and as it is your intention to gift the same to your Niece in Mumbai, I suggest that you instruct her to buy a phone to your choice in Mumbai, have it registered in her name and you use the phone on your visit to Delhi which will not be a problem.
The only obstacle that may occur is that how will she send the same to you in Delhi for your brief use. Unless the cell phone is sent through a personal acquaintance. Do not attempt to send the same through Courier unless Blue Dart guarantees to undertake the same.
