What is a ballet/tap DEN MOM/ What are there duties?
My daughter starts a new ballet and tap class and the instructor has asked me to be there den mother.What does that require I’m really new at the whole dance thing… My daughter is 4 and it is both of are 1st time doing something like this and I’m to embarrassed to ask at the school.

Whatever it is, the duties are probably more than you bargained for, unless the teacher is offering you a huge discount on your daughter’s tuition. My guess is that this instructor makes putting on a recital a major part of the program and thus needs helpers to pull it off. This is not a good sign that she’s asking the inexperienced parents for such help.

It’s the “Ballet-Modern FAQ” compiled by the alt.arts.ballet usenet group, the great-granddaddy of all dance discussion groups on the internet. Note the part where it says, “As for evaluating a school, note first that, as Sheila points out, if your child is very young (age 4 or 5), (s)he should start with a creative movement class, not half tap, half ballet. From this (s)he should move on to ballet or modern. Tap can be started at any time but is truly not as beneficial as ballet.”

“If they offer a huge variety of styles for children regardless of age, like jazz, tap, hip-hop, lyrical, tumbling, baton, etc., and especially if they offer “combo” classes with various styles combined, go somewhere else.”
