When do babies learn to play nice?
I joined a moms group when she was 5 months and she is almost 8 months and we are going to a baby gym class.
a couple months ago she discovered other babies, I know she thinkgs of them as objects still. She really likes them but squeals to get to them and tries to maul them, pull thier hair and bite them!
I am trying to teach her to be nice, the other babies dont seem to be as bad? They are a couple months older though,
I feel like a paranoid mom, but is this normal?

Babies don’t know about other people’s feelings until they are allmost three years old. Telling her to be nice means nothing to her.
The reason she is mauling the other children more than the children are mauling their friends, is beacuse that is the way she learns about her surroundings. She is a more sensory driven child, which means she probally learns best by touching, feeling her surroundings. Nothing is wrong with that.
the best thing you can do at your mommy groups is give her sensory toys – like squisy balls , anything with lots of texture to distract her. that should keep her hands off the the other children.
Never punish her – because she is not doing anything wrong. I teach preschool, and I have a few children in my class that are like this.
For example if I bring out something to share with the class, those children always need to touch it.
Those children are always the first playing with the play dough and at the water table. It’s really great for them. Their brains are filling in little gaps about those objects that other children may not have noticed.
